On July 29th, 1948, the day of the Opening Ceremony of the London 1948 Olympic Games, Dr. Ludwig Guttmann organized a sports competition for British World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries.
This event is widely considered to be the birthplace of the Paralympic Games.
The Paralympic Games have since grown into a major international sporting event, with athletes from over 160 countries competing in a variety of sports.
